Exeter, NH: Anxious Kids, Anxious Parents: 7 Steps to Interrupt the Worry Cycle

Lincoln Street School
25 Lincoln Street, Exeter NH, 03833
When children and their parents are in the grips of worry and stress, it feels overwhelming and mysterious. Anxiety is a very persistent master; when it moves into families, it takes over daily routines, schoolwork, bedtime and recreation. To make matters worse, the things adults (including many therapist and school systems) do to help and console anxious children actually make the anxiety stronger. When schools, parents, pediatricians and many others in the helping professions unknowingly focus on the content of the worry and the particulars of a diagnosis, they may give families and children the “crutches” to diminish the anxiety in the short-term, but are actually supporting a strategy that cements avoidance and leaves children less capable of handling life’s challenges.
The great news is that research also shows that modifying certain patterns makes a very big difference in whether or not children go on to become anxious or depressed teens and adults. Identifying what adults can do proactively and retroactively--paying attention to how and what we teach children about risk, danger, uncertainty, and problem solving—is critical.

Freeport, ME How to Help Your Anxious Child: A Workshop for Parents

Harraseeket Inn
162 Main Street, Freeport ME, 04032
When worry and anxiety move into a family, the impact can be confusing and dramatic. Yet families can learn how worry works (it’s not that complicated!), then interrupt the cycle of worry that has often persisted for generations. This workshop will describe the strategies Lynn teaches in her clinical practice, addressing common problems and specific questions with concrete language, role playing, and demonstrations. The goal is to help parents learn her approach to worry, take it home, and put it to immediate use.

Harraseeket Inn
162 Main Street, Freeport ME, 04032
OCD and the Family: Essential Strategies of Effective Treatment
When obsessive-compulsive disorder shows up in a child, it’s very likely that other family members have it, too. OCD is the ultimate cult leader, often ruling families for generations. But how skilled are mental health and school-based professionals at recognizing the many iterations of this disorder and then engaging the family in treatment? This workshop will describe how to recognize OCD, the common pitfalls of treating OCD in kids, and active strategies to get families unstuck.

Greetings!

My non-profit, Lives in the Balance, is teaming up with Jack Hirose & Associates on The Ontario School-Based Mental Health Conference. This conference will be taking place on May 3 – 5, 2017 in Toronto, ON. We have put together what I think is an extremely dynamic and informative group of speakers, including Steven Feifer, D.Ed., NCSP, Lisa Ferentz, LCSW, Dr. Adele Lafrance, Lynn Lyons, MSW, Dr. Lynn Miller, and Dr. Judy Willis.

The goal, as always, is to do everything possible to ensure that all students – and especially those with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges – are understood and treated in the most humane, compassionate, and effective ways, and my goal for this conference is to continue moving things in that direction. So I hope you will be able to join us for as many days of the conference as you possibly can.
