Living Through Stress and Anxiety

The demands of life today are making us increasingly anxious and stressed out. More and more we experience work and family life as rushed and overwhelming. It’s estimated that up to 85% of doctor’s visits are for stress-related symptoms. Clearly, neither the mind nor the body fare well under such conditions.

Yet even in our demanding society, there are those who manage well, enjoy life, and take risks. What’s the difference? While research points to the possibility of certain biological factors that make some people more susceptible to anxiety than others, the same research also strongly indicates that both anxiety and calmness are learned responses. We can all develop skills to better manage our thoughts, emotions, and relationships as we move through life’s challenges.

Mastering Anxiety

Anxiety can be experienced as a general feeling of uneasiness or constant worry, or may be related to a specific fear or situation. For some it has been around since childhood, and for others is brought on by adult life experiences.

Drugs, both prescribed and recreational, can offer relief from the symptoms. Some people use food, while others manage by isolating themselves or avoiding the triggers. However, real mastery over anxiety requires the ability to change thought patterns and calm the physical symptoms without relying primarily on chemicals or substances.

Relief Can Be Learned

Anxious people tend to think alike. My seminars address these common thought patterns, and teach the proven, concrete skills that allow adults and children to better cope with both external stressors and internal pressure. Seminars cover topics such as:

  • Breaking the pattern of rumination (or thinking about the same thing over and over), a hallmark of anxiety
  • Freedom from insomnia or sleep difficulties
  • Physically calming the body and the mind
  • Overcoming phobias
  • Parenting calmly through the tough times

During the seminars, ample time is provided for questions and answers, with specific ideas and solutions given to help with many common fears and anxieties.

While interactive seminars are beneficial in addressing the most common forms of anxiety, sometimes individual counseling is the preferred approach. If you would prefer individual sessions, please contact me to schedule a private appointment.
